Safe to try

Switch off at once. With the plug out, turn the pulsator by hand: very stiff means something is jammed or the gearbox has seized. Do not remove the base.

Tub turns one way only, or the timer stops short

What you see

The pulsator turns one way so laundry tangles, the timer stops part-way, or there is no ticking.

Likely causes

Worn wash-timer contacts, a weak timer spring, or a poor contact in the selector switch.

Safe to try

Try the other wash setting (normal or strong) and note the difference. Never spray liquid into the timer.

Technician

Checks the timer, selector and wiring; a timer is replaced with one matching its terminal count and duration.

Spin tub does not turn, or turns slowly

What you see

Nothing happens when you set the timer, clothes come out wet, or the motor hums without starting.

Likely causes

Inner lid not shut so the safety switch is open, an unbalanced or excessive load, the spin-motor capacitor, a brake that does not release, a garment between the tubs, or the spin timer.

Safe to try

Spread the laundry evenly, press it down with the cover disc and close both lids. With the plug out, the tub should turn freely by hand.

Technician

Checks the lid switch, capacitor, brake and motor mounts, and removes anything trapped under the tub.

Violent shaking and banging on spin

What you see

The whole washer shakes and moves, or the tub knocks the wall as it starts.

Likely causes

Usually an unbalanced load. If it persists with a balanced load: failed rubber mounts on the spin motor, a bent tub shaft, or a washer that is not level.

Safe to try

Stop the spin, rearrange the laundry around the centre and fit the cover disc. Stand the washer on level ground.

Water will not drain, or drains slowly

What you see

The wash tub stays full on the drain setting, or spin water flows back into it.

Likely causes

A raised hose on gravity-drain models, lint blocking the drain valve or its strainer, a drain-valve cable that has come off, or a stopped drain pump on models that have one.

Safe to try

Lay the hose on the floor, unkinked, and clean the lint filter at the bottom of the tub. Do not dismantle the valve.

Technician

Clears the valve or pump and checks the valve cable and selector switch.

Water leaking from under the washer

What you see

Water underneath during washing only, during spinning only, or all the time.

Likely causes

During washing: the pulsator oil seal or the drain valve. During spinning: the spin-tub bellows seal or its drain connection. All the time: an internal hose or a cracked tub.

Safe to try

Note exactly when it leaks and tell the technician. Do not run the washer on a wet floor.

Technician

Replaces the right seal or bellows. Water reaching the spin motor shortens its life, so do not put this off.

Washer is completely dead

What you see

No sound and no movement in either tub.

Likely causes

A damaged plug or cable (common, because it gets wet and bent), a burnt extension lead, a thermal fuse, or a loose internal connection.

Safe to try

Test the socket with another appliance. Never use a cable with damaged insulation or a melted plug.

Technician

Checks the cable, connections and timers, and measures both motors' insulation to the casing.

Spin tub keeps turning with the lid open? A safety fault

Lifting the inner lid should cut the spin motor and brake the tub within seconds. If it does not, the washer is a danger to hands, children's above all.

  • Never reach into the spin tub before it has stopped completely.

  • Usual causes: a slack or snapped brake cable, worn brake lining, or a lid switch that no longer cuts the power.

  • Never let anyone bypass the lid switch by wiring it straight through; it is a common shortcut and a real hazard.

  • Until it is repaired: pull the plug before opening the spin lid and wait for the tub to stop.

Habits that extend a twin-tub washer's life

  1. Do not overload the wash tub; overloading burns out the capacitor and motor and wears the gears.

  3. For spinning, spread the laundry, fit the cover disc and start with less than you think it can take.

  4. Dry the washer and keep it away from sun and shower spray; damp ruins timers and connections.
