Read this first

Smell gas? No flames, and do not touch electrical switches or the extractor fan. Open doors and windows, close the main valve by the meter (or the cylinder valve) and leave. For natural gas, call the emergency line 129 from a safe place. Do not wait for a repair appointment.

Burner goes out when you release the knob

What you see

On full-safety models the flame holds only while the knob is pressed. Holding it a few seconds after lighting is normal.

Likely causes

The thermocouple, a heat sensor that holds the magnetic gas valve open, is dirty, out of the flame or failed, or the valve is weak.

Safe to try

Wipe the thermocouple tip dry, seat the burner cap and hold the knob 5–10 seconds. Never tie it down.

Technician

Tests the thermocouple and valve, and fits a matching part.

Ignition dead or clicking non-stop

What you see

No spark, a spark at one burner only, or constant clicking.

Likely causes

Clicking: water or grease in a switch under a knob. No spark: plug, ignition module or wiring. One burner: a cracked or dirty electrode.

Safe to try

Unplug and let it dry for some hours. Still clicking? Stay unplugged and use a lighter.

Technician

Finds the stuck switch before replacing the module.

Weak, yellow or sooty flame

What you see

A yellow or orange flickering flame, blackened pans, or every burner weak.

Likely causes

Blocked ports, a misplaced cap, wrong air mix, or wrong injectors after an LPG or natural-gas conversion. Every burner weak: cylinder, regulator or a half-open valve. Yellow flames produce carbon monoxide.

Safe to try

Clean, dry and refit the burner head and cap, and ventilate. Never adjust burners yourself.

Technician

Checks injectors, air setting and gas pressure for the gas in use.

Oven will not light, or goes out

What you see

The oven or grill burner fails to light, or dies within minutes.

Likely causes

Oven thermocouple, thermostat valve, a blocked burner or the electrode. Oven and grill safety works like the hob safety.

Safe to try

Keep foil off the floor vents and hold the knob longer. After two failed tries, open the door and air the oven.

Technician

Checks thermocouple, valve, burner and ignition, and cleans the gas path.

Oven burns food or bakes unevenly

What you see

Burnt below and raw on top, or one side done first.

Likely causes

The thermostat or its displaced bulb, a leaking door seal, or a stopped fan on Bombay and Premier Smart fan models.

Safe to try

Use the middle shelf, keep the oven floor uncovered, preheat, and listen for the fan.

Technician

Measures the real oven temperature; checks thermostat, fan and seal.

Fan, digital display or timer not working

What you see

On digital and fan models (Bombay 9604F-5, Premier Smart): blank display, dead timer, or a silent or noisy fan.

Likely causes

Supply, timer module, fan motor or heat-damaged wiring. Some digital timers block the oven unless set to manual.

Safe to try

Check the plug, and set the timer to manual as your manual shows.

Technician

Isolates supply, module, motor and harness before replacing the display.

Door will not close; knob stiff or loose

What you see

The door drops open, the glass is cracked, or a knob is stiff, broken or spinning.

Likely causes

Slack hinges, a hardened seal, a snapped spindle, or dried grease in a gas tap that needs servicing.

Safe to try

Do not use the oven with cracked glass, or spray lubricant on knobs.

Technician

Replaces hinges, seal and glass; regreases taps with gas-rated grease and leak-tests.

Servicing a Kiriazi cooker yourself: the safe limits

Cleaning genuinely helps. The rest is off limits, because a mistake there means a gas leak.

  • You can: wash the pan supports, caps and burner heads, clear the ports with a brush or wooden pick, and refit them dry.

  • You can: wipe the ignition electrodes dry, and clean the oven, trays and door seal.

  • Never: undo a gas connection, tap or injector, grease the taps, or open the top or back panel.

  • Never: tie the knob down or wedge the thermocouple to keep a burner lit.

Kiriazi cooker internal wiring: when is it the cause?

A harness feeds the ignition switches, spark module, oven light, fan and digital timer. It runs beside a hot oven, so its insulation dries and cracks over the years.

  • Signs: ignition that varies with oven heat, power tripping as the oven warms, a burnt-plastic smell, or a tingle from the body.

  • Tingle or shock: unplug at once, and no self-ignition until it is inspected.

  • Correct repair: heat-resistant silicone or glass-fibre cable of the same gauge, routed clear of the oven, not ordinary flex and tape.

  • Hands off: the back and top panels also cover gas connections.

  • Super

    6400W (60×60) and 8900W (90×60); 8900SE2-5 and 8900WE2 have four gas burners plus two electric hotplates.

  • Joker and King

    Joker 9700W and King 9601S, 5 burners, 90×60; the King has self-ignition with oven and grill safety.

  • Premier Smart

    60FC6-5 (4 burners, 60×60) and 90FC9-5 (5 burners, 90×60), with fans.

  • Typical features

  • Older models without safety

    Accepted, but a blown-out burner keeps releasing gas.

Safe use that protects the cooker

  1. Ventilate while cooking; never heat a room with the cooker.

  2. Replace a dry, cracked or kinked gas hose, and keep it off the oven body.

  3. Test joints with soapy foam, never a flame.

  4. Never line the oven floor or vents with foil.
